What is a perfect strike actually worth?

Hi Reader,

🏌️‍♂️ Same speed. 60 yards gone.

Everyone chasing distance frequently starts in the same place. More speed.

The data says start somewhere cheaper.

Golf stats guru Lou Stagner pulled launch monitor numbers from an academy he works with. Over 100,000 swings.

He then paired swings that were identical in clubhead speed, and differed only in where the ball met the face.

  • At 86 mph: 227 yards from the middle of the club face, 190 from the low heel.
  • At 100 mph: 258 against 215.
  • At 106 mph: 282 against 221.

Same speed. Up to 60 yards, gone.

Here's why the gap is so painful. A heel strike adds sidespin. A low strike adds backspin.

Less ball speed, and far more spin on what's left. That's how a drive stalls in the air and lands yards short of where it should.

Most of us would take another 3 mph of swing speed if it were offered.

Almost none of us would take it if we understood that the middle of the face is worth twenty times more.

And the middle of the face is free.

But I found the middle of the face. And still lost yards.

Stagner is spot on and I would never argue against strike being listed as the highest ROI fix when it comes to distance.

But it still wasn't my own problem.

I was doing the one thing Stagner and every driving expert tells you to do above all else. Striking it well. My distances were however still very disappointing for my swing speed.

13 yards of carry and 19 yards of total lost in this one example and over double that gain it turns out was sitting there unclaimed for me once I sorted everything out.

Here's where the missing yards were. My attack angle was minus 2.4 degrees. On some swings, minus 4.4. I was hitting down on my driver and had no idea.

Moving the ball forward in my stance got me hitting up on it. Ten yards of extra carry, immediately.

But then the drives started ballooning and going way to high. Launch had jumped 3 to 6 degrees. A fitting then took me from 10.5 degrees of driver loft down to 8, and handed me another 20 yards.

Over 32 yards of carry distance and 43 yards of total distance in total - all with the same swing speed.

But this was my leak answer, and that doesn't mean it's yours.

Driving distance doesn't come from one thing. It’s several factors working together and the impact of each is not equal either. That’s why no driving distance single tip works for everyone.

And that's exactly why we made Distance Decoded.

It finds the yards already sitting in the swing you’ve got, then tells you what's most likely to give them back. No swing rebuild. No range marathon.

It starts by showing you where your distance is leaking. Find your lost yards now.

⛳ What the distance actually gets you

So say you find those yards. What do they get you?

Not the drive. The shot after it.

Imagine you’re 200 yards out. Fairway lie. Pin in the middle.

How often is a good shot from there actually supposed to happen?

Lou Stagner went to the Arccos database with a tight definition. A good shot travels at least 90% of the way to the hole and finishes within 10 yards left or right.

From 200 yards, a 20-handicap manages it 8% of the time.

Now shorten the shot. From 100 yards the same golfer does it 42% of the time.

Same player. Same swing. Five times better, purely from standing closer.

A fortnight ago the Arccos handicap data told us approach play is the biggest chunk of what separates you from the next level. This is that chunk, shot by shot.

You’re not buying yards off the tee when you hit it farther. You’re buying an easier next shot.

Thanks for reading and as ever and most importantly enjoy your golf!

Play well 👍

Justin Thomas' mixed iron set

Fully Focused On YOUR Golf Hi Reader, The second way an iron fails your bag audit Last week I asked you to check whether any of your 14 clubs are doing nothing by measuring the yardage gaps between them. But that is only the first test. Your 5-iron might sit exactly where it should between your 4 and 6. But if you can’t produce that distance reliably, the gap exists only on paper. That is what MyGolfSpy examined this week. Their normal score when testing an iron set combines results from a...

How far should you hit your irons

Fully Focused On YOUR Golf Hi Reader, Which of your 14 clubs are doing nothing? A few weeks ago we told you the neat 10-yard ladder between your irons probably doesn't exist. This week someone put a number on it. Golf Digest went to Cobra, whose Connect sensors feed into Arccos, and asked how common the problem really is. And they found ... 42% of golfers have one gapping problem. Two clubs sitting within two yards of each other. 19% have two. 38% have three, four or five. Now look at how far...

2-Piece vs 3-Piece vs 4-Piece vs 5-Piece Golf Balls

Fully Focused On YOUR Golf Hi Reader, The ball that suits you can be the hardest to build If your swing is under 85mph, we’ve told you a soft 2-piece ball is probably right for you. This week MyGolfSpy put the best-selling one under the microscope. The Callaway Supersoft. Grade C. Not Recommended. Weight and diameter, fine. Compression, not fine. Across 36 balls the spread ran 40.3 to 53.8 — 13.5 points against a 9.7 average. Here’s the bit that's most noticeable, and it’s their line, not...
